As a member of the newly developed junior task force on Natural Disasters, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is requesting that you create an advertising campaign for “The Safest Place in America.”

This title obviously reflects the rarity of natural disasters in that area of the country, so your selected city must be free (or almost free) from the threats of wildfires, severe winter storms, thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis and earthquakes. Since this advertisement will be distributed by FEMA to American citizens looking to relocate, you must defend your choice with scientific evidence; after all, you do not want a bunch of lawsuits from other cities.

The last requirement from FEMA is that your campaign must include an outline map of the United States with natural disaster danger zones illustrated. The map should be color coded and contain a legend indicating the symbols or colors for each type of natural disaster.

Your GOAL: Convince an audience that the chosen city is the safest place to live in the United States.

Your AUDIENCE: Citizens looking to relocate their families in a city free from the dangers of natural disasters.

Your PRODUCT: Television commercial, travel brochure, animation or multimedia presentation illustrating the absence of natural disasters in the chosen city, with a convincing rational for why severe winter storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis are unlikely to occur in the given city. Information will include scientific knowledge regarding the formation of such disasters as well as an outline map of the United States illustrating where these disasters have historically occurred in the United States.

As you research, keep careful notes so that you can be ready to create your campaign.
